Product description
Fantasy adventure directed by Terry Gilliam. Christopher Plummer stars as Dr Parnassus, leader of the extraordinary Imaginarium: a travelling theatre where members of the audience are given the irresistible opportunity to go beyond reality by means of a magical mirror and explore the limitless realms of their imaginations. But despite his amazing gift for guiding the imaginations of others, Parnassus harbours a dark secret: years before he made a pact with the devil in order to buy himself immortality. When the devil appears to collect his payment - Parnassus's beautiful 16-year-old daughter Valentina (Lily Cole) - Parnassus and his troupe, now joined by the mysterious shape-shifting Tony (variously portrayed by Heath Ledger, in his last ever performance, Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell), embark on a wild and surreal journey through parallel worlds to save the girl and undo the mistakes of the past.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 March 2010I will start of by saying this is probably the hardest review I have ever tried to write as I know this film will be like marmite, you either love it or hate it.
The imaginarium marks the final film that Heath ledger made before his untimely passing way and for this reason the film was nearly never finished. It was down to the friends of Heath that this gloriously sureal story was finished with appearances from Colin Farrel, Jude Law and Johnny Depp.
The story is a complicated but well written tale of a 1000 year old monk called parnassus who has a travelling side show through which he tells his stories with the aid of people who participate by travelling through the mirror on the stage.
The use of the other actors is possible as The passing through the mirror fascilitates the person that enters to see into the imaginarium through there own thoughts. So cleverly the character of Tony that Heath played can appear as anyone and so the 3 friends of Heath fill the role for him.
All the storys have a moral based on the life of the person who steps through the mirror. After being persuaded by "Old Nick" to have a little bet with him Parnassus tries to point the right path for those who pay admission to save there soul. At the same time Old Nick played by Tom Waits of Swordfish trombones album and Rain Dogs fame tries to get there souls through temptation and greed.
Parnassus though is constantly tricked by Old Nick and makes one bet too many involving his daughter who works on the show, that come her 16th birthday she will belong to him! They have 3 days and the 1st to win 5 souls wins the bet but no one wants to listen to Parnassus out of date show. Then enter the group Tony (Heath Ledger) who is saved from hanging under a bridge by the travelling show. He is not all he appears and Parnassus is at first sure Old nick sent him but even Old nick admits he isn't sure about Tony! So Tony helps modernise the show and the race is on for the 5 souls.
The Blu-Ray quality is excellent and the Audio True HD. The Imagery of the film though intially around the less salubrious parts of London grows into a mind expanding vision of the imagination as folks enter the mirror seek there hearts desire.
There are a whole heap of extras and a poignant optional introduction by Terry Gilliam marking The making of the film and the passing away of Heath Ledger.
I personally loved this film and think its possibly the best work of Gilliams Career which is no mean feat considering the difficulty in making it.
The more i think on this film the more i see in it and without wishing to sound arty or pompous perhaps the reviewing of this wonderful film says as much about the reviewer as it does the film itself. I only hope as Gilliam says himself that you can enjoy it as much as I have
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 March 2015The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is the opus magnum of Terry Gilliam and, tragically, the last film of Heath Ledger. It started filming on December 8, 2007. On January 23, 2008, the day after Heath's death, the production stopped until February 17. On February 18 filming begun again, and Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law came along and finish Heath's performance (later they donated all their salary -20 million dollars- to Heath's daughter Matilda). Everybody wanted to finish the movie, to show Heath's last performance. In the movie, there are 2 worlds, the real world and the imaginary world. Fortunately, all the scenes of the real world (which were shot in London) were already finished when Heath died. The scenes in the imaginary world were going to be shot in Vancouver. Tony, Heath's character, appears different every time he enters in the Imaginarium. Depp, Law and Farrell, apart of having some physical resemblance in the movie with Heath (same hair, same moustache, same goat beard, same make-up), copied Heath's mimics in the movie, and the film does not get affected by that. The sadness is that Heath does not appear much. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a magical, poetic and beautiful movie, with an incredible art direction (Caroline Smith), beautiful cinematography (Nicola Pecorini), brilliant costumes (Monique Prudhomme), beautiful music (Jeff & Mychael Danna) and an amazing cast (Heath, Christopher Plummer, Andrew Garfield, Lily Cole, Verne Troyer, Depp, Law and Farrell, and Tom Waits shining in his amazing & funny portrayal of the Devil). Although the movie is beautiful, to watch The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is painful, because it's the real and artistic prove of Heath's death. At the end of the movie, instead of writing "A film by Terry Gilliam", Gilliam wrote in the credits: "A movie from Heath & friends". According to Gilliam, that was what the movie was. The film is in memory of Heath and of producer William Vince (who died 5 months after Heath) / Antonia Tejeda Barros (Madrid)
P.S. The DVD is packed with very exciting EXTRAS, including Heath Ledger Featurettes and Tribute.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 September 2023Part Fantasia, Wizard of Oz, it is a story of reality and imagination, of morality and truth. On one level it is a child-like trip but, if you can follow the good/evil thread, it is a parable. Great acting and actors thrown in too!

5.0 out of 5 stars un "must have" para amantes del cine de Terry Gilliam

5.0 out of 5 stars I like the story
The Imaginarium is a great movie to watch as it causes you to use your imagination as to what happens to the characters in the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars 「

5.0 out of 5 stars L'uomo che voleva ingannare Tom Waits

5.0 out of 5 stars Kein Film für eine Nacht.
