Synopsis
In this furiously fast-paced action-comedy, Charlie Croker (Oscar winner* Michael Caine) is out of jail and on the make with an ingenious plan for the heist of the century. Aided and abetted by top criminal mastermind Mr. Bridger (Noël Coward), Charlie sets off with an ace team and three very special cars to lift a major stash from under the noses of the Turin Polizei. - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 February 2025a classic british 60,s movie that looks and sounds great on blu ray and bought at a great price.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 December 2024Settle down and wait for the line "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off" as the van disappeared in smoke and flame.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 December 2024pleased with this
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 November 2023First of all I ordered the 50th Anniversary edition and that's what the cover says but comes up on the ps3 as 40th edition. Although the menu doesn't state which it is so can only assume they just recdid the cover for the 50th.
The film long time since I watched it all the way through. And watching it now the first half of the mini sequences cud have done with music. It's less exciting without.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 December 2024one of the all time greats, wonderful way to experience it too
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 August 2023The film is a quintessentially English crime caper and everyone knows the plot. Most non-Brits struggle to understand the nuances. For example, like the cast of 'The Ladykillers' we Brits know the actors well and the characters they frequently portray. John le Mesurier plays John le Mesurier. , Irene Handl plays Irene Handl, and so on.
A recommended companion to the film is Matthew Field's excellent book 'Self Preservation Society' wherein you will learn the real line Caine should have delivered about blowing the doors, how many scenes were largely left to the actors to improvise, which cars survived filming, and the ignominious end of the bus.
This is one of my top three favourite films of all time, the other two being Wolfgang Petersen's 'Das Boot' and Guy Hamilton's 'The Battle of Britain'. Being a bit of a collector, I have four different releases of 'The Italian Job' on DVD, Blu-Ray etc and I wanted the 4K UHD version this version provides. I have no complaints except that the colour saturation has to be toned down for comfortable viewing. My only real complaint is that the accompanying second Blu-Ray disc is Region A only (USA). Never mind. I went out and bought a region-free Blu-ray player ...
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 September 2024Great price for a start, worth every penny for this great quality release. The film itself is obviously a classic, check it out for the excellent acting from Michael Caine, Noel Coward and the rest of the cast. Watch this film with a car enthusiast friend and get ready for them to yap for hours!! Great film

5.0 out of 5 stars Mini Coopers rule
A really well crafted film, great acting, great script, great direction, pacing, excellent scenery, an iconic film celebrating the 1960s England with perhaps the best car chase of any movie ever. A tongue in cheek heist movie with UK gangsters, the Mafia, a young Michael Caine portraying Crocker a slightly bent minor crook fresh out of her Majesty's goal who lucks into a great robbery plan; & the last film of Noel Coward as a patriotic old school UK mob boss who supports & bankrolls the escapade, while still in the pen as his way of both supporting the nation & getting some lucre too.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the One to Get
Let's start at the beginning, 1969-small downtown theatre, Texas. The marquee reads "The Italian Job" and Michael Caine. And that was virtually all the promotion this film got. The producers on the bluray talk of the failure of the movie in the USA and it was no wonder with how it was just dumped into theaters with no aplomb. Lucky for me the theatre included Michael Caine in the title because at 14, I thought he was the coolest dude in cinema at the time (I felt blessed by the gods that I had wavy hair like him). I still remember clearly the sign and the serendipity of seeing two new Jaguar XKEs parked out front presumably owned by the fighter pilots from the nearby AFB. Seeing The Italian Job then and there made it one of my favorite movies of all time. This was a zeitgeist experience. If you are not of those times, then the movie may be enjoyable, but its magic is just a mystery to you. I mention all this because most reviewers of older movies don't capture that first love experience that original fans have. I can appreciate Gable, Cooper, and Flynn, but not on the level of a 1930's or '40's filmgoer. So that makes the extras on the bluray so enjoyable as fortunately, most of the participants were still around in 2009. And despite what the Amazon description says, my US bluray Has been playing all the features. It was good to see that such a major Hollywood player as Robert Evans was a big supporter of Italian Job and is still fan enough to contribute his interview.
I don't need to go into plot, critiquing, etc. Because that is well covered ground. In closing, this is a must have for those who love this movie. For a lonnng time it was unavailable, and then came out on EXTENDED play video tape (the cheapest format in VHS-thank God those days
are over). Then the DVD (just had to make sure I was ordering the real Italian Job and not that new crap-name stealer) came out. If they can
ever convert it to 3D, I'd buy that. But the truth is soon no one will be around that grew up with this movie and the zeitgeist, like the morning mist will have vanished and no one will put up the money to polish up this gem and put it on display. So buy it now while you can.
