is a 1971 American neo-noir action thriller film starring Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider, and Fernando Rey, and directed by William Friedkin. The screenplay, written by Ernest Tidyman, is based on Robin Moore's 1969 book of the same name. It tells the story of fictional NYPD detectives Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle and Buddy "Cloudy" Russo, whose real-life counterparts were Narcotics Detectives Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, in pursuit of wealthy French heroin smuggler Alain Charnier (played by Rey).

At the 44th Academy Awards, the film earned eight nominations and won five for Best Picture, Best Actor (Hackman), Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay, and was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor (Scheider), Best Cinematography, and Best Sound Mixing. Tidyman also received a Golden Globe Award nomination, a Writers Guild of America Award, and an Edgar Award for his screenplay. A sequel, French Connection II, followed in 1975 with Hackman and Rey reprising their roles.

Often considered one of the greatest films ever made, The French Connection appeared in the American Film Institute's list of the best American films in 1998 and again in 2007. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"

French Connection II is a 1975 American neo-noir action thriller film starring Gene Hackman and directed by John Frankenheimer. It is a sequel to the 1971 Academy Award for Best Picture winner The French Connection. The film continues the story of the central character, Detective Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle, again played by Gene Hackman who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the first film. In the film, Doyle travels to Marseille, France, where he is attempting to track down French drug-dealer Alain Charnier, played by Fernando Rey, who escaped at the end of the first film. Hackman and Rey are the only returning cast members.

I saw both of these films at the cinema when they first came out. Ground-breaking and important in their own ay at the time and Hackman, in my opinion, has never been better.... although The Conversation is worth a look, as is...but I digress! Gritty documentary style - particularly in the first film - set the tone for a lot of movies that followed and these two films are important additions to the list of films of the 1970s that paved the way for a lot of what was to follow...

Hello all, I felt obliged to "weigh in" after seeing these terrible reviews. Of the literally thousands of DVDs and hundreds of Blu Rays this may be one of my most treasured collections. Sure the first movie doesn't look like a recently released movie...it was shot on a fairly low budget..without a load of additional lighting brought in so the film had a grainy ...documentary feel and look. The problem with source material like this is when you upgrade the method of presentation..it becomes more obvious. There are programs that will let them hide some of that grain but as we've seen with many recent upgrade DVDs (Predator) they can become unreal in a much more obvious and distracting way.

As most agree...the sequel looks great...and anytime John Frankenheimer does a commentary its a mini film school. The bonus features are not the kind you can barely get through but I've watched them many times over. Interviews with the real "Cloudy" the participants in the film.....documentaries on Frankenheimer...shoot these Blu Rays are packed with extra content and value. I particularly enjoy your own Mark Kermode and whenever he does a documentary like this one and on The Exorcist...they are informative , well done little movies on their own.

Don't let the overly technical complaints keep you from enjoying hours of good fun and classic action! Did I mention Gene Hackman is absolutely one of our greatest actors and deserved his Oscar?

    Thanks for reading....

I well recall seeing this film and its successor when it came out at the cinema, but over the intervening years had forgotten its fast pace and thrills. What fun it was to relive those all moments!

Naturally the furious car chase under the oveherad railway was the obvious climax of 'Part I', but there are other wonderfully authentic atmospheric moments such as detective's 'sixth sense' in spotting the criminals gathered at the cafe table and the superb 'bust' of the drug users and dealers inthe bar where the informant is stationed. The urban street scenes in the suspect tailing episodes is also fascinating and impressive. The powerful factual indictment of the contemporary American legal system at the end credits is particularly poignant. The sequel 'II' was never as thrilling as its forerunner, the drug addict scenes being quite drawn out, but there is much unconscious humour there and the final and fitting end of the master dealer gives satisfying conclusion and moral satisfaction to the viewer.

These two films in a complete DVD package are good value and offer much enjoyable future viewing of a period of powerful American film drama.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stil und Handkamera hoch 3!
Reviewed in Germany on 29 October 2002

5.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on 18 July 2015
