Product description

The first two parts of the fantasy thriller trilogy set in Moscow. Among normal humans live the 'Others' possessing various supernatural powers. They are divided up into the forces of light and the forces of the dark, who signed a truce several centuries ago to end a devastating battle. Ever since, the forces of light govern the day while the night belongs to their dark opponents. In modern day Moscow the dark Others actually roam the night as vampires while a 'Night Watch' of light forces, among them Anton (Konstantin Khabensky), try to control them and limit their outrage. In the sequel, 'Day Watch', over a year has passed since the denouement of the original film. Anton continues to fight the forces of Darkness while simultaneously attempting to find and save his son (Dmitry Martinov), who has become a great dark Other, from those same forces. But when dark Others start mysteriously being murdered, and Anton is framed for the killings, he must put his goal on hold and try to escape the Day Watch who are out looking for his blood.

The Day Watch is my favorite. Both movies are packed with action scenes to extreme and beyond. They drag an eager viewer into the mystical world of supernatural forces of Day and Night juxtaposed in eternal stand-off that should not be disturbed. Yet, powers of human passion get involved driven by their own calls, oblivious to the arrangements between Day and Night, screwing up the precarious balance, unsettling the chain of unpleasant events, making the powers of Day and Night work hard in order to bring the things back to where they started, so that humans can carry on with their happy naïve lives.

In the ancient bound of irreconcilable drives of Duty vs Passion, an oriental recipe for human happiness emerges.

Night Watch - Overall, this is a solid pre-twilight vampire film that’s less about the emotional complexities of being a vamp, and more about utilising their superpowers to create exciting action set pieces. It's totally watchable, entertaining, and big/loud/shiny enough to help you forget that the story is actually a bit pants. Score: 7/10

Day Watch - Whereas Night Watch felt like a big-budget action movie Day Watch feels like it’s pulling in about 20 different directions; not simple enough to be mainstream, too vast and ‘out there’ to be an indie, too silly and eclectic to be ‘fantasy’, too grim to be a comedy… even the music baffles as it skips between a grand Mary Poppins-style theatrical score, cheap and tinny Russian nu-metal, and Euro-pop for the duration. Day Watch really shows the how a visionary director without the budget, runtime, or discipline struggled to fully realise such an ambitious sequel: sure it’s bigger, louder, and more expensive but it’s defining features are that it’s overlong, over-complicated, and yet another round of light vs dark. Score: 3/10

Pictures, subtitles, etc are not an issue with the two-disc Blu Ray Box set.
Can't really complain about getting two big loud dumb blockbusters on Blu Ray for £4!

i love this film - both parts don't disappoint, you dont have to have great knowledge about "these" things to understand

i watched night watch 6 years ago and was blown away. everything was breathtaking, more story than pics though. now i watched day watch in blu ray and this time picture has taken priority, story was just bit soppy and predictable

overall i can recommend those films to anyone who'd like to see a bit of matrix in russian style

(ps if you have a bit of sense you wont put english dubbing - it sucks!)

Very interesting and thoroughly watchable pair of films, but if you haven't read the books you'll be completely lost. I have, but even so on occasion I had to rewind a bit to sort out what was going on and where in the story line we'd got to.

For the price, you can't go wrong.

I love both of these movies, although it has to be said that the books are better. As is often the case.

every now and then good films come out of RUSSIA and these are good films well worth watching
  • Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 November 2015
These two movies are, both, original a-n-d action-packed.
"Nightwatch" is the international version with added scenes to
make the unusual story a bit clearer for those of us that needed
the assistance! "Daywatch" is easier to "get" than "Nightwatch".
The audio [selection] and video on both films are excellent!
I admit it. I had this double feature in my shopping basket for a
long time. When the price dropped to £5 one day, THIS Yank
picked it up. Since I live in Germany, the multiple languages is an
    added PLUS!

Skillfull Director (Timur Bekmambetov - Wanted) made excellent movie about epic battle of good and evil but in the parallel universe.

Effects are equal as in the Hollywood movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars BOTH MOVIES are PSYCHEDELIC TRIP with NEVER SEEN EFFECTS
Reviewed in the United States on 1 April 2021
I ENJOY BOTH OF THEM. A DIFFERENT TAKE ON THE WORLD AT LARGE. No Masterpiece, but quite Entertaining and Imaginative. Horror with Mixes of fantasy and Sci-Fi. This Movie is Dark and Quite Different from Hollywood Clichés, which makes it interesting to watch. It is fast - maybe too fast for one who has not read the book. BOTTOM LINE It is a VAMPIRE MOVIE, but I DO NOT THAT.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excelente saga rusa lastima que no continuaron
Reviewed in Mexico on 16 January 2018

1.0 out of 5 stars Incommensurable navet
Reviewed in France on 25 October 2014

4.0 out of 5 stars Fans of the original will surely love this follow up
Reviewed in the United States on 10 September 2016
Fans of the original will surely love this follow up, but it is never anything great. Day Watch is good, but leaves a lot be desired. I thought that the film was well constructed with a prominent sense of style, which is a trademark of Bekmambetov's films. Day Watch in many ways is a better film than Night Watch because it expands on the story established in the first entry. Night Watch was a film that was all over the place with its plot and relied on its visual style to create its entertainment value. Although similar, this film tones down on heavy special effects and focusing more on storytelling. But that's not saying that effects are not prominent in the film. There are plenty of scenes that have effects and are quite exciting, but the plot is better thought out here and the film is a more focused, more detailed movie. The performances are good and there are aspects of the film should appeal genre fans. However as a whole, the sequel doesn't break any new ground in terms of vampire lore. I enjoyed the film, but I felt it could have been better and it was on par with the original.
