Product description

Drama set in 1953 in Wellesley College, a prestigious women's college in New England with a student population of young women from respectable, privileged families. On the whole the girls, products of a time when women's roles were strictly defined, show more interest in marrying well than in achieving intellectual growth or artistic freedom. But when a new art history professor, Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts), begins teaching at the college, their repressed upbringings and narrow ideas are brought into question. A Berkeley graduate with progressive ideas, Watson sets out to stretch her students intellectually, and challenge their limited outlook on life.

    * outline

    Set in the 1950s U.S.A, a Newly graduated Art historian (Julia Roberts) enters an elite all-girls ultra-conservative college to start her career. The school syllabus has already been set - in - stone, and anyway the students have devoured it before day one of the terms start. Being taken aback, (Julia) restarts the angle to teach them by with fresh ideas of modern art appreciation. There is tension between the students, and the tutor gets hassle as she breaks the merely regurgitating facts and developing skills to take further in say becoming a lawyer, rather than just being marriage fodder, the given future plans. Whats happens next?

    * Comments

    This film is of the ilk similar to the movie 'Hidden Figures', or 'Green Book', as it explores historical ideas and personal potential at the time when it is encouraged into becoming locked into more submissive, unfair futures. Its really good story played well. The tension between a conservative student with the more radical tutor who is trying to break her bonds and open her mind to better future plans and not into being locked into a lesser, feminist future is a really strong substory story on its own. I enjoyed it without a female romance being required. This is a good film over a mug of tea.

    I've wanted to watch this for years but never got round to it. Finally watched it and it was okay but I was just expecting something.....more. I thought it would be a really powerful, feminist film that gave you goosebumps but it was just a mediocre film that whiled away a couple of hours. Enjoyable but not worthy of another watch.

    Nicky に恋に落ち Julia Stiles 目当てで購入。彼女が演じる Joan は例によって優等生役なのだけれど、1950年代ファッションがいまひとつしっくりいっていない(特に髪型が…)ところが残念。そんな中で目にとまったのが、保守的な名門大学内でセクシービームをまき散らす Giselle 役の Maggie Gyllenhaal 。独特のエキゾチックさが魅力的で、他の出演作も観たくなった。
