Amazon.co.uk Review
Ocean's Eleven improves on the 1960's Rat Pack original with supernova casting, a slickly updated plot and Steven Soderbergh's graceful touch behind the camera. Soderbergh reportedly relished the opportunity "to make a movie that has no desire except to give pleasure from beginning to end", and he succeeds on those terms, blessed by the casting of George Clooney as Danny Ocean, the title role originally played by Frank Sinatra. Fresh out of jail, Ocean masterminds a plot to steal $163 million from the seemingly impervious vault of Las Vegas's Bellagio casino, not just for the money but to win his ex-wife (Julia Roberts) back from the casino's ruthless owner (Andy Garcia). Soderbergh doesn't scrimp on the caper's comically intricate strategy, but he finds greater joy in assembling a stellar team (including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and Carl Reiner) and indulging their strengths as actors and thieves. The result is a film that's as smooth as a silk suit and just as stylish. --Jeff Shannon
On the DVD: Ocean's Eleven on disc is hardly swarming with special features, but just like all good heists it's quality not quantity that counts. The cast commentary is lively and it's nice to hear intelligent comments coming from Hollywood's big league for a change. However, it's the director and writer's commentary that is the real gem; it's funny, enlightening and most of all it allows Ted Griffin to put the case forward for all screenwriters across the world as to the importance of their craft. The main feature has an impressive transfer of sound and visuals, making the suits sharper and David Holmes' soundtrack even funkier. --Nikki Disney

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 October 2002Back in 1989 when Stephen Soderbergh triumphantly arrived on the movie scene with the multi-award winning 'Sex, Lies and Videotape', the world seemed at his feet. Then followed 9 years of relative obscurity before the release of the excellent 'Out of Sight', starring Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney. Since then of course Mr Soderbergh's career has gone from strength to strength with critical and popular acclaim for Traffic and Erin Brockovich, not to mention the small matter of Oscar recognition.
So what of 'Oceans Eleven', the star-studded remake of the 1960 Frank Sinatra/Rat Pack picture? Well, first off, when it was announced as Soderbergh's next movie, it certainly seemed like an odd choice. The original movie was after all, by all apparent accounts, not that good (to put it kindly) and it was generally felt that it had been something of a vanity project for Old Blue Eyes. Then of course details of the cast started to emerge, and what a cast it is, which includes; George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle (with a silly and pointless English accent), Elliot Gould and in a cameo appearance, world boxing champion Lennox Lewis. Surely the combination of Soderbergh, Clooney, Roberts, Pitt et al could not miss, could it? Of course not, for Ocean's Eleven is everything that that the original tried and failed to be; smart, stylish and quintessentially cool.
The story revolves around Danny Ocean (George Clooney), a career criminal who has just emerged from a stretch in jail (cooly wearing a blue tuxedo, of course) and his attempts to put together a crew (of eleven) to rob three Las Vegas casino's. Not only is it his aim to spirit away $80m from a seamingly impenetrable vault but all this is to be achieved whilst wooing back his ex-wife Tess (Julia Roberts) who is dating the sleazy casino owner Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia). To help in achieving this aim Danny contacts old friend Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt), and gets bank-rolled by an ex-Vegas tycoon (Elliot Gould), who has a personal grudge against Benedict. Together they form a crew including a Chinese acrobat (Shaobo Qin), and a Jewish con man (Carl Reiner). Precisely what everyone's role is in the heist and indeed the movie is not always clear and perhaps because of this Matt Damon kind of gets lost among the myriad of stars and Julia Roberts is only really required to smile and look good (which of course she does).
Much of the pleasure in this movie is seeing all the plans of the heist fall into place with the odd twist and turn. It also has plenty of humour to bring a smile to your face and although this may not be the most exciting heist movie you will ever see, it is none the less never less than watchable, very enjoyable and quintessentially cool. This is another feather in Soderbergh's cap. The comeback kid has done it again.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 January 2025This feature film never gets old I could watch it a million times and still like it just for the difference in characters.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2012Danny Ocean manages to convince the parole board that he is a reformed prisoner, and gets released after four years behind bars. He then rounds up a talented crew to undertake the most audatious robbery of all time......the theft of $160 million from the most secure vault in the world that services the Mirage, Bellagio, and MGM Grand casinos in Las Vegas. How does he do that?!
This film is the epitomy of cool. In every respect it has an air of sophistication and just oozes pure class and coolness. The cast is spectacular, ranging from young to old, with each character excellently played, especially George Clooney as Daniel Ocean. The performances are magnificent. The storyline is excellent, and the film is very expertly paced by Soderbergh so that the plot unfolds gradually without revealing all to the audience too soon. This alone is wonderful, and adds to audience surprise and excitement in the realisation of how the crew undertake the robbery, and how they overcome the twists and turns that occur. I even like the finishing music to the film which is just totally cool and also oozes class. The first piece of end music is in the same league as Green Onions by Booker T & The MG's as it is so cool.
I found this film to be so refreshing when compared against the sequel films that were in some places just too fast, garbled, and chaotic. It is often the case that film sequels never stack up to the original, and it is certainly true with Oceans 11.
So, for such a small price, obtain a real cool film gem, and sit back in the comfort of your own home and watch how these cool guys pull off such a wonderful robbery. This is entertainment at its best.
I enjoyed Oceans 11 immensely, and hope that you do too.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 September 2021One of the coolest films from 2001. Fantastic price and perfect quality.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 August 2016Used to be a fantastic film, but so much of it has been done so much better since, and many of the action and planning scenes have been parodied to the point where it's difficult to see why this was so popular in the first place. A bit of a shame, really. If you've seen it and know you like it, go for it. But for a new viewer, it's more of a miss than a hit.
